Item upgrading allows players to boost the gear score of an item upgrader kit to 700, and then add a final perk. Items can be upgraded by having them in inventory and heading to the kiln.

Certain items can be upgraded to benefit from their unique stats (like a perfectly made breakpoint armour that can be rolled to use in melee PvP) while others like weapons do not vary greatly post upgrade, and therefore aren't worth upgrading.

Weapons

Upgrades to weapons can improve their numerical stats, such as attack damage, crit chance, and PvE/PvP damage. Weapons come with a flat rate bonus that increases damage per second. In addition there are many weapons with a set bonus that activates when three or more of the same weapon are equipped on a unit. This bonus can sometimes exceed the damage that a weapon upgrade alone can cause.

The cost of upgrading a weapon is based on the rarity of the weapon and its current level. For instance an item with a rating of +2 will require two regular Smithing Stones to upgrade while an upgrade of +3 requires four. The number of stones needed to upgrade a gun will increase until it requires an upgrade to a higher level of Smithing Stones. At that point, it will reset back to one.

Upgrades to weapons also change the stats of their base. While this is generally beneficial however, it could have negative effects as well. Upgrades can render items unusable, unless you are extremely lucky.

The ability to upgrade armor items to improve their effectiveness. In the case of a helm or chest, it will boost the defense of its base, while gloves and belts improve their required strength and dexterity. Armor also offers the option of rerolling its Enhanced Defense percentage, which means that it can sometimes reroll to a lower value.

The upgrade template for a weapon shows the new stats it will gain upon upgrading in addition to their respective values.
